An engaging portrait of a young member of a hunt, painted on his mount before an open landscape, perhaps Quorn Hunt country in Leicestershire. Painted in oil on (re-lined) canvas, within a gilt-gesso ogee moulding frame.
Unsigned; attributed to Claude Lorraine Ferneley, (1822-1892).
Claude Lorraine Ferneley was the son of John Ferneley Senior with whom he sometimes collaborated and who had a considerable influence on his son's work. He was named after his godfather, Charles Lorraine Smith, the famous squire of Enderby and patron of sporting artists. Claude often painted the backgrounds of his father's larger commissions, always recorded in the accounts and charged for at a lower rate. He was born and lived his entire life in Melton Mowbray, was said to lack drive and ambition, but was endowed with considerable talent.
