Chinese Tea Chest

hover over image to zoom

A pretty tea chest made in China around 1800 to transport the hugely valuable commodity to England, decorated in the Chinese taste with a scene from mythology, a mountainous landscape and to the lid a floral sprig. It is interesting to note that this method of decoration was adopted in Regency England and became known as penwork, often executed in a chinoiserie style.
