Bug Bear

A profusely carved coconut 'bugbear' flask, mid eighteenth century. Four interlocking oval cartouches carved with the figures of 'Hope', standing with an anchor before shipping, 'Justice' with scales and shipping, 'Plenty' with a full cornucopia surrounded by a large cargo of barrels and bales on a harbour wall and the God 'Poseiden' riding a Hippocamp before a draped background of fish scales. There is a further cartouche depicting a centaur hunting, the spaces between all filled with carvings of representing  Piety, various lions, crocodiles and sea creatures. The face with a lion's mane and a curly-ended moustache.

 

European, perhaps English or Dutch, circa 1790.
