A pair of portraits in pastels by James Sharples; Mr. & Mrs. Ridding. He the great grandfather of an Edith Bradbury, (according to an inscription to the reverse). Within the original giltwood moulding frames with broad Verre Églomisé glass mounts. English or American circa 1800. 

James Sharples was born in Lancashire, England, around 1751. An English portrait painter and pastelist, he moved with his family to the United States in 1794 and died in New York City in 1811. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1779.
