Thomas Ona Odulate was a sculptor, a Yoruba from Ikorodu who carved a local light wood with an adze and knife to produce sculptures representing mostly British colonial officials and visiting dignitaries to Nigeria. From the ruling Mosene family of Ikorodu, he later moved to and worked in Lagos; he died in November of 1952. Ona finished his carvings with red and black ink together with white shoe polish, the majority of the work left to the natural tan of the wood. This figure is a regular character in Ona's oeuvre, The District Officer, and retains his separately carved spectacles and pith helmet. Nigeria c.1940.
