Pair Lampe a Moderateur

hover over image to zoom

A smart pair of 'moderator' oil lamps, bronze and parcel gilt with an applied, stamped label 'Par Brevet d'Invention et de Perfectionnement', suggesting they were made by the inventor and developer of this type of lamp, Bernard-Guillaume Carcel.

French circa 1850.

h:25.5 in x 5.25 in x 5.25 in

In 1800 Bernard-Guillaume Carcel invented a clockwork mechanism to raise the oil to the wick, thus negating the need for the reservoir to be above the level of the wick. These lamps with complicated mechanisms were expensive and as late as 1860 Cassell's Household Guide was advising that they were liable to breakdown and requiring constant attention; 'not to be compared with old Argand burners'.
