Artist: David James

When painting the sea, David James is amongst the few artists, particularly of the 19th century, able to convey the immense power and translucent depth of the waters. His principle subject matter was the seas around the British coast; Cornwall, Devon and the Scilly Isles, but he did leave his native British shores as this present work shows. Signed and dated 'D. James '81' it depicts a Spanish Xebec approaching the viewer with other craft far off, before the towering Rock of Gibraltar. Painted in oil on canvas and within a gilt gesso 'Watts' frame of the period.w:30.25 in x h:22.25 in (19.75 in x 11.75 in)
