hover over image to zoom

A wood carver's tour de force, perhaps ecclesiastical,  designed with Christian symbolism in the form of a vase surrounded by a grapevine entwined by a snake. (The grape referring to Christ and the Last Supper; the snake evil, deceit, perhaps representative of Judas Iscariot.) French circa 1870.

20.5 inches high when on the black glazed ceramic base. The base with a chip; the vase with two chips to two leaves.
