Superb Burr-Elm Writing Box

A superior, brass bound, burr elm writing box. Original gold and blind tooled leather lined, mahogany carcass, coromandel banding, pen-tray and compartment covers. A gold tooled red leather box for pens and a Perry & Co Perryian Filter Double Patent Inkstand within. Two gilt-brass candle sockets within one compartment; two bobeche for the same beneath the pen-tray. A drawer running the full width beneath. Fitted with a Mordan & Co Patent Bramah-type lock with key. English circa 1840.

A similar inkwell by James Perry & Co of London is held in the collection of the Army Museum. It was used by Captain (later Lieutenant-Colonel) William Tyrwhitt Drake, Royal Regiment of Horse Guards, during his active service in the Napoleonic Wars betwween 1803 and 1815.
