Tasting & Seeing: Mezzotints, laid down onto glass and reverse painted, depicting; 1). A fashionably dressed young woman eating mulberries.

2). Half length painting of a girl before an easel mirror.

Engraved by Richard Houston after the works by Francis Hayman, published by Thomas Bowles II, London 1753. Within fine, period (orginal) pear-wood faced moulding frames with a carved and sanded wooden slip frames.

English circa 1753.

From a set of the five senses after Hayman. Allen suggests Hayman may have been inspired by Philip Mercier's two sets of paintings of the senses, executed by the end of the 1740s. He painted small modellos for the engraver to use, one of which, for 'Seeing', has survived (Collection of Sidney Sabin in 1987).
