Victoria Queen MDCCCLIII

hover over image to zoom

An interesting box, Lignum Vitae, closed by a thread, a border and base engraved on an ornamental lathe, the central medallion profile of the young Queen Victoria probably pressed as opposed to being produced on a lathe. Beneath the portrait is the date 1853 in Roman numerals. It seems probable that this box was produced to celebrate the birth of Victoria's penultimate child, Leopold, the birth aided with the use of the new anaesthetic Chloroform.
