Prusian Officer under Frederick the Great

A grisaille painting of an officer of the Prussian Light Infantry at the time of Frederick the Great, circa 1780.

The Prussian Light Infantry was founded under Frederick the Great as an effective counter force to the light troops of the Austrian and Croatian border soldiers. They came to be regarded as elite formations being well trained and disciplined and led by young, fit, and intelligent officers.

These monochrome works are thought to be the work of engravers to give an indication of how the printed engraving will eventually look.

Within a late eighteenth century gilded moulding frame.
