Iberian Candlesticks

A fine and rare pair of brass candlesticks from Spain or Portugal, circa 1725.

Evolved from a familiar group described by Michaelis as ‘Latin’ and seventeenth century, the present pair retain the raised edge to contain the running wax but now have the simplified feet and a pronounced cone into which the stem is threaded; features that developed throughout the eighteenth century. It is the ‘wide flange which adorns the top of the socket’ a ‘feature alone that must put a date in the first quarter of the 18th century’.

See Ronald F. Michaelis, Old Domestic Base-Metal Candlesticks, p.102 Figure 148.
