A very handsome portrait of a Bay horse named Philosophy.

Painted in oil on canvas and within a good, period oak frame with a running composition moulding of oak leaves and acorns.

Signed and dated by the artist, J.C. Tunnard 1893.

John Charles Tunnard lived at Sandy, Bedfordshire, and was born there in 1875. He was a painter of equestrian subjects throughout East Anglia.
The portraits he painted of the Shuttleworth family’s horses hang at Old Warden Park in Bedfordshire.
