Colonel William Flint
A fine Georgian portrait of Lt. Colonel William Flint of the East India Company.
William Flint was born in 1731 and is thought to have entered the service of the East India Company as a cadet to rise through the ranks.
He died of consumption on the 11th July 1795, Colonel in the Madras Establishment, of Coates Hall, Snaith. He was interred in the Chancel of Carlton Chapel, Carlton juxta Snaith.
At the second siege of Wandewash in 1780, under the command of the then Lieutenant Flint, with just one other European, a small native garrison defended the besieged fort against the Mysoris under Hyder Ali. Flint is recorded to have held out with the utmost gallantry until mid January the following year by when the approach of Sir Eyre Coote forced Hyder Ali to raise the Seige. By then the garrison had but one day’s ammunition remaining.
Painted in oil on canvas and within a fine composition and giltwood frame
probably original to the work, circa 1770.
