Carved Coconut Cup

Folk Art carved coconut cup mounted with a silver metal rim standing on a flared stem and foot.

The name W. Myde is carved in a banner, the man apparently a soldier, his bayoneted musket leaning against the wall behind him whilst he shares a table with his wife, drinking and smoking his pipe. He wears a hat with a plume.

The cup is carved all over with a plethora of detail including a church with a burial ground and a surrounding hamlet, a farmhouse with ducks and a herd of dairy cows with a milkmaid. There is a post windmill in the near distance. The parlour with the couple has a square paned window, a mirror hangs in the wall and the fireplace is set with a kettle keeping hot; fire tools in use are lying around.

This cup clearly dates to the end of the eighteenth century but its origins are less certain; it may be colonial, it is perhaps Dutch.
The name Myde is of Dutch or Flemish origin.
