Cast Iron Egyptian Head Door Knocker

Made to celebrate one of Admiral Lord Nelson’s great victories; The Battle of the Nile at Aboukir Bay, August 1798.

Napoleon’s defeat lead to his army being trapped in Egypt whilst the Royal Navy’s dominance off the Syrian coast contributed significantly to the French defeat at the siege of Acre. This in turn prompted Napoleon’s decision to abandon Egypt and return his attention to Europe.

English, contemporary with the occasion, circa 1800.
