From the seventeenth century and throughout the eighteenth century, nutcrackers were often given to newlyweds as a gift for their new household, hence the heart-themed thumbpiece in this instance; the barrel a further symbol for plentiful happiness.
Dating from early in the eighteenth century, the measurements across the heart 1 3/8 inch, the barrel’s length 1 1/4 inch.
