Eighteenth Century Candle-Stand

Mahogany candle-stand with a broad base and set-screw; the adjustment in height allowing one to compensate for the reduction in the height of the burning candle thus allowing for a more constant light.

It is likely that these stands were most often used in a bed-chamber, and to take a chamber stick. Pinto states that they were usually made in pairs, (one for either side of the bed), and the tray has a diameter similar to most chamber-sticks.

English circa 1800.
