Gothic Revival Book Carrier

A fine, early 19th century Gothic Revival Book Carrier, possibly designed by Richard Brigdens for George Bullock, the base of beautifully grained oak on mahogany surrounded on three sides by a heavily cast bronze gallery with a satin-gilt finish with bright burnished edges and bosses. English circa 1830.

George Bullock originally trained as a modeller and sculptor in Liverpool and moved to London in 1812, where he established his furniture making business in Tenterden Street, Hanover Square. One of his clients was Sir Godfrey Webster who restored the medieval buildings of Battle Abbey and commissioned from Bullock furniture in the Gothic style. Richard Bridgens (1785-1846) collaborated with Bullock on many occasions including, it is thought, the Battle Abbey commission. The use of oak was typical of the firm’s interest in using woods native to the British Isles.
