Italian Portrait Frame

Italian parcel gilt frame dating from the turn of the eighteenth century, the green painted spandrel with a leafy artichoke at each corner and a plain hollow sight; the outer frame with a tongue and dart design before a hollow with twisted rope and a plain taenia back edge. At each corner is a black-painted mask taken from Ancient Rome, made popular at this time by the likes of Thomas Hope.
