James McArdell after Joshua Reynolds

A portrait of Jean or Jane Carmichael, mezzotint, engraved by James McArdell after the original work by Sir Joshua Reynolds; published in 1759. On becoming the second wife of John Carmichael, 3rd Earl of Hyndford, Carmichael became the Countess of Hyndford. The Earl was an ambassador during the reign of King George II to the courts of Prussia, Russia and Austria. They lived at Carmichael House in Lanarkshire where she died aged 80, 30 years after her husband’s death. They had no children.
