Portrait of an Artist
Something of an enigmatic painting made so not only by the subject’s demeanour but by the fact that we know so little about the work.
Painted in oil on artists’ milled board, within a gilded composition frame, the background suggests our subject is an artist, perhaps a sculptor.
Probably English, dating to the first half of the nineteenth century.
