Regency Lamp. Circle of Bullock or Hope

An amazing Regency period bronze table lamp the designer within the circle of Thomas Hope or George Bullock, derived from Pirenesi, specifically the artist’s series Vasi, Candelabra, Cippi, Sarcophagi. (See “Vases by Pirenesi” within our own collection).

Three eagle monopodia support a vase with classical Greek heads between swags of plentiful fruit; likely this in turn would have supported a three branch torchere. (See, for example, Christies Sale May 21st 2015, Lot 117).

The present lamp retains its original dark bronze patination finished with gilt highlights and has been rewired for electricity.
Unmarked, although other examples by both Messenger and Sons and James Smethurst make compelling cases for an attribution to one of these makers. (See also Christies sale “The Collector” lot 185, 12th November 2020).

24.5 inches high, excluding the modern stem and bulb holder.
