Sallad Girl by William Ward after Hoppner

A fine, early and rare mezzotint, the Sallad Girl by William Ward (1766-1826).

An early state, 3rd or 4th of 5, made before the ‘correction’ was made to the spelling.

The engraving was made after the painting by John Hoppner (1758-1810) of his wife, Phoebe Hoppner, painted the year they married, 1782. Phoebe was the youngest daughter of Mrs. Patience Wright, an American portrait modeller of some repute.

Framed within a good hand-made copy of a correct 18th century print frame.
