Searce

A very fine mid 18th century apothecary’s searce, identified in Pinto as dating from the 17th century.
However, the fine scalloped rim is so similar to the base of a George II petal-based candlestick that this must surely date from the eighteenth century.
Used by an apothecary to sieve lumps from powdered medicines, the top part, with its metal grill, is fashioned using sycamore whilst the base, made to receive the powder is perhaps beech.

The rim of the upper part is miraculously without damage. (As is the whole thing).

English, early to mid eighteenth century.
