Shagreen Covered Coffre Fort

An exceptional and rare shagreen covered coffre fort, profusely decorated and protected by gilt-lacquered brass mounts, kingwood veneered throughout the interior. When opened, the front panel can be lowered to access two drawers; within the side panels are sharply threaded steel bolts that can be employed to screw the chest to a wooden anchoring, (one absent).

These chests, produced towards the end of the 17th century and into the beginnings of the 18th century, have been variously ascribed to different countries and regions, but are now thought by many authorities to be English, circa 1700.
