The Danish Brig Cathrine

A sharply executed portrait of the Danish Brig Cathrine, depicted in Chinese waters off Hong Kong by a Chinese artist working from Canton.
Within a ‘Chinese Chippendale’ carved and lacquered frame, perhaps original to the work.

o.s:27.75 in x 22 in

The Brig Cathrine was built by J. R. Schrøder of Fredericia in 1876. Although there were a number of ships named Cathrine in the Danish merchant navy this Chinese artist has faithfully recorded Cathrine’s identification flags by the letters NPRK. The vessel was badly damaged in 1895 off the Brazilian coast at Parahyba do Norte resulting in her being written off. She was, however, successfully rebuilt by a local ship builder, C. Moul, and named Camillinho but then not heard of again after 1896.
