Trading Ketch Lord Iddesleigh by John Loos

A portrait of the trading ketch, Lord Iddesleigh, painted oil on canvas by John Loos, one of the Loos family of ‘pierhead painters’ working from Antwerp during the last quarter of the 19th century. Loos is recorded as living and working from Antwerp, (fl. 1860-1880) painting especially the American ‘Down Easters’ at the end of the century.

Within a dark hardwood wedge form frame period to the work.

The trading ketch Lord Eddesleigh was launched in the middle of 1888 having been built in Ipswich by G.P. Gildea & Co. Her first owner was Herbert Hawkins of Lower Tooting London. She is later recorded as being owned and operated from Harwich.
